“Dr. Seuss for Military Brats” Picture Books Help Children Coping with Deployment at Ft. Benning

New York, NY October 25, 2005 — Books for BratsTM creator and author, Michelle Ferguson-Cohen, is scheduled to appear as part of the weekend long celebrations for God Bless Ft. Benning Days. The author, a proud military brat who was born at Ft. Benning, will read her You’re My Hero! titles, especially written for the children of her community , in a series of reading events over two days.

November 18
12:00 – 1:30 Columbus Public Library (Macon Rd.)
2:30 – 3:30 Waldenbooks (Peachtree Mall)
4:30 – 6:30 Barnes & Noble (Whittlesey Blvd.)

November 19
1:00 – 2:00 God Bless Ft. Benning Days (Family Fun Area)

Across the country and the globe, children of military personnel are being confronted with the difficulties of having a parent deployed in the service of our country. Ferguson-Cohen wrote Daddy, You’re My Hero! and Mommy, You’re My Hero! to help military families and children talk about deployment.

The books are unique, because they speak from a child’s perspective. They address issues of separation in a simple manner to assure and comfort small children thereby helping to prevent feelings of helplessness, and provide language to help small children express emotions associated with this event.

Since the titles were first published in 2003, they have made fans of thousands of military children, their families, and are endorsed by educators and childcare professionals. Now with the 2005 release of the new board book editions, children continue to enjoy these picture books and their message of pride.

“Sometimes in the throes of politics, policies and opinions about war, people forget about the children,” says Ferguson-Cohen. “These books are a tribute to these families who can’t forget. This much-ignored community, who need and deserve our compassion and support.”

With “suddenly military” families on the rise and depending on local civilian communities for support, Ferguson-Cohen is pleased that her books are becoming popular in the mainstream and being read in classrooms with children of non-military families.

“Education is always the first step toward understanding,” says Ferguson-Cohen. “In America we have learned to live together through tolerance. Especially as adults, there is much we can do to avoid putting the weight of war on children.”

Ferguson-Cohen is the daughter of a retired Army General who served two tours in Vietnam, as well as the granddaughter of a soldier killed in action during WWII.

The two titles are the first in the Books for BratsTM series for children of parents in military and public service brought to you by Little Redhaired Girl Publishing. As a service to the military, National Guard and Reserve communities, FRGs are given special discounts and a multimedia version of the book is available to read online free of charge to facilitate immediate need.. Books for BratsTM titles are available online at and www.booksforbrats.net and through retailer stores nationwide and online.

Since 2001, Books for Brats has had a free multimedia version of the book available on its website to ensure all readers had free access to our You’re My Hero! deployment titles.

Because a civlian contractor hired by the National Guard copied our multimedia book file and sold it back to the National Guard in CD-Rom format, we have had to remove the files from our website.

It’s so sad when people steal and even worse when they take advantage of something that’s meant to benefit the most vulnerable. Our apologies to the thousands that have enjoyed having these files available online. It was our hope and intent we could count on the trustworthiness of others.

BROOKLYN, NY (PRWEB) June 10, 2004 — In honor of Military Dads, Little Redhaired Girl Publishing is providing free e-cards created especially for fathers affected by military deployment on its www.booksforbrats.net website. Little Redhaired Girl Publishing is the publisher of the Books for Brats TM series which released its “Daddy, You’re My Hero!” title last year.

“We should remember our soldiers everyday, but Father’s Day is especially difficult for those with children on the homefront,” says author and illustrator Michelle Ferguson-Cohen. “We hope this will give children, friends and family a way to say how proud and thankful we are for these brave men!”

The program also achieves two important goals set by the author: first, to acknowledge and support military families and secondly, to encourage civilian awareness of military families’ experience.

The “Daddy, You’re My Hero!” children’s picture book addresses deployment from a child’s perspective. Its simple, non-threatening message is meant to assure and comfort small children coping with separation, as well as encouraging pride in the parent’s service. The books also suggest tips to maintain communication and deal with feelings of helplessness.

As a service to the military and reserve and national guard communities, a multimedia version of the book is available online free of charge to facilitate immediate need and is also available for sale in paperback version at at retail stores nationwide, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and the publisher’s www.booksforbrats.net website.

Little Redhaired Girl Publishing released two titles from the BOOKS FOR BRATS series in 2003, “Daddy, You’re My Hero!” and “Mommy, You’re My Hero!”. Acclaimed by educators and childcare professionals, both titles are written and illustrated by Michelle Ferguson-Cohen. Ferguson-Cohen, a self-professed military “brat”, wrote the books from a child’s perspective to help children coping with deployment. Gift Helps Comfort Children of the 106 AVN Affected by Deployment

BROOKLYN, NY (PRWEB) December 19, 2003 –Little Redhaired Girl Publishing, Inc. joined forces with local business leaders to help the 106 AVN FRG donate a special holiday gift for the children of their unit. Local car dealers Dave Strieter of Strieter Motor Company, Ken Dahl of Dahl Ford and Bob VanScyoc of Buysse Dodge all from Davenport, Iowa made contributions to the cause.

The soldiers of the 106 AVN National Guard unit have been deployed in Iraq for almost a year. The Illinois and Iowa based units FRG (Family Readiness Group) arranged for a holiday party for their 150 children. Jennifer Zimmerman and Trisha Elkin raised funds to buy copies of the Daddy, Youre My Hero!” and Mommy, Youre My Hero!” children’s picture books to help the children cope with deployment.

The books are part of Little Redhaired Girl Publishing’s “Books for Brats” (www.booksforbrats.net) series for children of military and public service personnel. Books for Brats and local business leaders donated matching funds to make the gifts possible.

Author and illustrator of the Books for Brats series, Michelle Ferguson-Cohen, says “We felt this was a great way to put the books in children’s hands and create a partnership between the community and the military families. Especially during the holidays, it’s important for us to acknowledge the sacrifice the families of our troops make. Especially the little ones.”

The program also achieves two important goals set by the author: first, to encourage civilian awareness of military families and second, to acknowledge and support military families.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) November 11, 2003— Everyday, millions of children worldwide are affected by the deployment of a parent to an unaccompanied assignment in the military. Little Redhaired Girl Publishing and SPINOZA Bear have joined together to create a special package to help children coping with these deployments.

The purpose of the package is to help promote self-esteem and relieve tension and anxiety for young children.

The package includes SPINOZA…the Bear Who Speaks from the HeartÔ and one of Little Redhaired Girl Publishing titles “Daddy, You’re My Hero!” or “Mommy, You’re My Hero!” from their BOOKS FOR BRATS series. The Military Deployment Package is available through the SPINOZA Bear website at www.spinozabear.com and via a link at the BOOKS FOR BRATS series site at www.booksforbrats.net. The package also includes:
· the complete library of nine audio tapes for Spinoza Bear. Many families are also taping the voice of the deployed parent to help children to continue to feel close.
· a workbook titled Help For Kids, Understanding Your Feelings about Terrorism, War and Peace that includes tips for parents, teachers and caregivers written by Carol Gesme, MA., CFLE. Gesme works with individuals, groups, and organizations as a chemical dependency counselor and a licensed family life educator.
· and a heart shaped lapel pin.
In order to make the $150.00 package available to financially strapped military families, the team is reaching out to veteran organizations, civilian organizations and individuals to sponsor children. Sponsorship donations can be made through Spinoza’s “buddy bear project”, Spinoza Cause Marketing Alliance and the Books for Brats Angels Program.

“Our mission is to strengthen our communities by providing support for emotional health through love and comfort; cultivate positive values and attitudes in everyone; and to help people understand and appreciate the value and uniqueness of each one of us,” says Beth LeMasurier, President of The Spinoza Company.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Spinoza Bear organization. We have a similar mission, to bring comfort and care to children in time of need. We also believe public awareness and support of our military families will help prevent burdening young children with politics and other adult issues.” says author, Michelle Ferguson-Cohen
