My wife and I are the grandparents and caretakers of my grandson who is 5 years old. How can he be eligible to receive this or participate in this program? His Dad a U.S. Marine is in SD Calif., and has been deployed to the middle east in the past. I am a 20 plus yr Army Veteran, with disabilities.
First of all, thank you for your service! You and your son and now your grandson are remarkable heroes!
I regret to tell you that we are not set up for sales to individuals. This offer is specifically for our wholesale clients who order in bulk quantities.
You can contact your sons Fleet & Family Support services and see if they have placed an order. They should be able to get you a book free of charge.
If not, your local Barnes & Noble should carry the book and it’s also available online. Links to stores are here:
We are interested in reaching out to grandparents like you who are caring for their grandchildren while their children are deployed and will hopefully be coming up with a program to reach out to this community soon!
I believe the person is suggesting that you also offer the discount to families who are caring for children and may not be connected to any of the programs you are giving the discount for. You indicate that you are not set up for sales to individuals but your advertisement/posting is being distributed to individuals.
Thanks for your comment!
It is extremely unusual we are able to make this offer and are doing so because of a special print run that is available to our wholesalers that are making bulk orders. We are simply forgoing the profits and passing the savings from this bulk order print run onto the organizations that make it possible. That is the sort of thing we are able to do as a publisher since one of our primary missions is to get the books in the hands of children who need them!
Because we are only set up for wholesale sales (we are a small organization with no governmental support and no other resources), we don’t sell to individuals, so we are unable to give a bulk discount to individuals, that is why the offer states it is for Military Organizations. We post this information on our site, because our website is an information portal for educators, support group leaders, daycare operators, as well as individuals. Many of our readers who have purchased the book as individuals are eager to share the book with the organizations they work with.
Sales of the books to individuals are made possible through a variety of retailers that are listed on our store page. We do not control their discounts or sales, since we are only a wholesaler to those outlets.
While we do not sell books to individuals, we do make our books available to readers through our many programs. Books for Brats has donated thousands of books to schools, individuals and other organizations to ensure children can access the books. We continue to seek out venues to provide books to children who need them and are currently working with national non-profit First Book in order to do so. A digital format of the book used to be available on our site for free, however, civilian contractors for the National Guard made illegal copies of our copyrighted book and sold it at a profit to military support organizations, so we sadly, had to discontinue that program.
As for the current offer, many of these organizations we service who qualify such as Operation Military Kids and the YMCA work outside military communities in the civilian world. This ensures that we reach out to families and caregivers outside the reach of military bases. Originally, we decided to forgo government grants and make the book available commercially specifically to ensure that the book would be available to families outside military organizations and away from military bases.
